  9. Tom sat at the table with Beth-Raine.   
  10.  
  11. Suddenly the walls trembled. Dust and   
  12. smoke fell from the distant, nearly     
  13. invisible, rafters, small rivulets at   
  14. first from the deepening shadows in the 
  15. seams of the old hall. The faded banners
  16. that hung from iron stancheons shuddered
  17. as if in the first tentative flicks of  
  18. an approaching storm, then snapped in a 
  19. sudden breeze.

  21. "What's happening?" she whispered,      
  22. staring around in sudden fear.          
  23.  
  24. "I don't know." He reached for her hand,
  25. and without a word they stood. At the   
  26. far end of the room a fire roared in the
  27. huge fireplace where no fire was before.
  28. A nearby tapestry burst into flame,     
  29. blackening and curling the dim colors of
  30. armored knights, ladies with high       
  31. headdresses, dense forest and fading    
  32. flowers. Thick smoke poured into the    
  33. room. Then the building began to fall.

  35. They ran toward the door, down along the
  36. endless table, set for a banquet never  
  37. eaten. Chairs fell, blocking their way. 
  38. Dust swirled up, filling the air; smoke 
  39. thickened. They choked as they ran. Tom 
  40. could hear her coughing. The floor      
  41. underfoot shuddered, shifted, fell      
  42. apart. Then the ceiling collapsed.
